Galway’s famous street market, trading in Church Lane beside medieval St Nicholas’ Church for centuries – dating back to a 14th-century royal charter from King Edward III. One of the oldest markets in Ireland.
What’s on: fresh fruit and vegetables, organic breads and cheeses, homemade jams and preserves, handcrafted jewellery, pottery, woodwork and clothing, plus international food stalls (Indian curries, Spanish paella, Japanese sushi, Moroccan tagines). Saturday is the best day for bread, vegetables and plants; craft and takeaway food stalls trade every open day.
Extra trading days: Wednesday-Friday during July and August, and daily during the Galway International Arts Festival. A separate Traditional Christmas Market runs daily Dec 14-24.
To trade: a Casual Trading Licence from Galway City Council is required; applications open annually each September.
